We have a lot of doctors here at Akron Veterinary Referral & Emergency Center. So we thought it would be fun to introduce you to the people in the white coats who care for your animals on a daily basis.

You may have seen her walking the halls of AVREC. She may have been the surgeon who took care of your dog or cat. She always has a smile on her face, and a soft spot in her heart for your pets. Her name is, Sakthila Jeyakumar. But we call her, Dr. Jey. So, let’s get to know her!

Sakthila Jeyakumar, BVSc, MS, is one of five surgeons at AVREC, and has been with us for two years. Dr. Jey has taken quite the journey to get to us all the way in Ohio. She was born in Sri Lanka, and grew up in Sydney, Australia, where she discovered her passion for veterinary medicine. While in Australia, she went to Veterinary school at the University of Sydney. After graduating with her Bachelors in Veterinary Medicine, with Honors in 2008, she came to the United States for the remainder of her education. First, she attended Mississippi State University for her internship in small animal medicine and surgery from 2009-2010. Lastly, she attended Auburn University for her residency in small animal surgery and master’s degree and graduated in 2013.

Before she found her way to AVREC via the southern part of the USA, we have to go back to Australia. Growing up around a wide variety of wildlife, it didn’t take her long to figure out what she wanted to do for a living, “Speaking to my vet growing up, he saw so many different patients for a variety of problems; there was never a dull day! Growing up in Australia, I enjoyed wildlife and conservation and thought veterinary medicine would allow me to practice and take care of so many different creatures. ” For some, picking a special interest isn’t always easy, picking a specialty can be just as difficult. So why surgery? To Dr. Jeyakumar, the choice was clear, “Surgery is a rewarding specialty. You have the ability to treat a patient and see improvement very quickly. There are so many conditions that we treat from a torn ACL to a congenital heart abnormality and we see so many of our patients walk out of our hospital wagging their tails and feeling better in a matter of days.”  There is a lot to love when it comes to working in Veterinary Medicine. From the variety of breeds, their ailments and even their names, the part she loves the most about what she does? “Being able to take care of sick animals and see them go back to their families who love them dearly.” And that is why we love her! Not only is she a great surgeon, she cares for her patients like family.

It isn’t all work and no play for Dr. Jey. When she isn’t treating your family members, chances are she is taking care of her on own fur baby, Udi. Udi is a 2 year old “rambunctious” mix breed that melts your heart with his puppy dog eyes. The rest of her family includes one sister and a big extended family of 7 aunts and uncles, and 8 cousins. We bet those family get-togethers can be pretty fun! When she isn’t with her puppy, she’s probably outside. Dr. Jey enjoys hiking, running, swimming, playing tennis and even rock climbs in her spare time. Like most women, chocolate is her guilty pleasure. Put chocolate with dried fruit and nuts – and you officially have the way to her heart.

Looking back, it’s easy for her to say that she made the right decision to become a Veterinarian, and we’re glad she does! Dr. Jeyakumar has a passion for her field and animals she treats that cannot be denied. We are lucky to have her! So next time you see her, throw out a “War Eagle” or hand her a can of chocolate covered almonds and you’re sure to get a smile.
