She’s the new kid on the block, and she’s already making a difference at AVREC. Board-certified Neurologist, Dr. Michele Provencher joined our team on August 1, 2016 to lead our newly formed Neurology department. After a few months on the job, let’s get to know Dr. Provencher!

At an early age, having grown up with animals, Dr. Provencher always knew she wanted to work with them, in what way was the hard part. It wasn’t until she was in undergrad, a mentor suggested becoming a veterinarian. Dr. Provencher took that advice to heart and shadowed a veterinarian and was able to observe a GDV surgery. She was hooked.

Dr. Provencher first obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from The University of New Hampshire. From there, she became a graduate of The University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine and stayed in Golden Gopher land to complete her internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Minnesota. From one Big Ten school to another, Dr. Provencher then found herself in the state of Ohio for her Neurology and Neurosurgery Residency at The Ohio State University. Dr. Provencher likes to stay busy, during her residency, she obtained her Master’s in Comparative Veterinary Medicine and during vet school, she is proud to say she also worked as a veterinary assistant at a private practice.

At a young age, Dr. Provencher has always known she wanted to work with animals, but what was it about Neurology specifically that attracted her to the specialty? “Localizing a lesion can be similar to solving a puzzle.” Says Dr. Provencher. “I like the combination of medical, surgical and emergency cases.” As far as what she likes most about what she does on a daily basis, “I like spending time with my patients, helping improve their quality of life, and watching them interact with their families.” And that’s exactly why we love Dr. Provencher!

Dr. Provencher isn’t always wearing her white coat and stethoscope… Outside of AVREC, she enjoys spending time with her two dogs, Annie and Sami, and being outdoors – running and hiking. Don’t tell anyone, but her guilty pleasures are ice cream and Chipotle – which she probably eats while watching some of her favorite TV shows like The Walking Dead, Flip or Flop and The League, or her favorite movies; Goodfellas, Bridesmaids and Pulp Fiction.

Born and raised in Glens Falls, NY (About an hour north of Albany, NY) Dr. Provencher has two sisters who live in Pennsylvania and Connecticut and her parents, who live in Upstate NY. There’s nothing like sitting down to read a good book, and Dr. Provencher certainly enjoys a mystery novel, or two. Her favorites, the Alex Cross series by James Patterson, the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich and finally, the Chet and Bernie series by Spencer Quinn (Chet and Bernie are a dog and human detective team where the books are told from the dog’s perspective). Next on Dr. Provencher’s reading list? Gardening books! She would love to test out her green thumb and learn how to garden. Perhaps Dr. Ferguson can teach her how to plant a Buckeye tree to get her started.

It isn’t always easy moving to a new city and being the new doctor in a new department at an animal hospital, but it’s a challenge our Dr. Provencher has already tackled successfully. We are certainly lucky to have her here at AVREC! If you haven’t had the chance, give Dr. Provencher a hardy NE Ohio welcome! We’re happy to have her on the AVREC team!
